The Role of Performance Arts in National Dialogue and Unity

Nigeria is a country of rich cultural diversity, yet it continues to grapple with issues of identity, governance, and social cohesion. The need for national dialogue has never been greater, and storytelling remains one of the most powerful tools for shaping public consciousness. Bridging Fractures on a Nation’s Stage, an initiative by
Development Catalyst, seeks to leverage theatre, music, and dance to foster civic engagement, inspire change, and redefine national unity.
This nationwide creative competition invites theatre students and performing artists from Nigerian tertiary institutions to adapt the book Birth of a Fractured Nation into compelling stage performances. Through storytelling, these adaptations will explore themes of governance, resilience, unity, and identity, encouraging conversations about Nigeria’s past, present, and future

Why Theatre? The Power of Creative Expression in Social Change
Theatre has been a medium for social commentary throughout history. From Shakespearean plays critiquing monarchy to modern African theatre addressing colonialism and democracy, performance arts have the ability to reflect societal realities, provoke thought, and inspire action.
For Nigeria, Bridging Fractures on a Nation’s Stage serves as:
- A platform for national dialogue – Engaging audiences in discussions about governance and identity.
- A celebration of Nigerian talent – Showcasing creativity and storytelling across regions.
- A tool for civic education – Using performance to educate citizens on governance, history, and leadership.

What Participants Can Expect
- National Theatre Competition: Universities and creative groups across Nigeria will submit adaptations of Birth of a Fractured Nation.
- Live Performances & Regional Showcases: Shortlisted productions will be staged in major cities, engaging local communities.
- Grand Finale & National Celebration: Winning teams will perform at a national theatre festival coinciding with Nigeria’s Independence Day in October 2026.
Why This Initiative Matters

- A creative outlet for political and social discourse – Engaging young minds in nation-building conversations.
- An opportunity to bridge ethnic and regional divides – Strengthening national identity through cultural exchange.
- A showcase for artistic and literary excellence – Encouraging young creatives to use their skills for advocacy and change.
Who Can Participate?
- University theatre groups, drama clubs, and performing arts students from accredited tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Nigeria’s future depends on bold thinkers and problem-solvers. If you have a vision for governance reform, economic transformation, or technological advancement, this is your opportunity to turn ideas into action.
